The great philosopher, Plato, once theorized that humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces. Zeus, who feared their power, split them into two separate beings, condemning them to spend the rest of their lives searching for their other half. This theory is known today as searching for one’s soul mate.
In a world of approximately seven billion people, it is difficult to comprehend that there is such a concept as soul mates. It is one of life’s most mysterious experiences; finding true affinity with another person.
A soul mate can be hard to find. Firstly because there is no real proof that they exist, secondly, because there is no correct way of defining a soul mate. No scientific proof or medical study can be done to find ones exact match, it is done merely by hopefulness. The idea that they are destined to find one another.
“I think people can like someone, but not love them, but I also think someone can love someone and not like them,” said History Teacher Newsome “I think when you find your soul mate they are someone that wants the best for you,”
There is no way of proving or disproving the existence of soul mates. Soul mates much like being apart of a religion is based solely on faith.
“I think each person has one [soul mate],” said Mr. Newsome. “I married mine, once I saw her smile and heard her laugh I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.”
The reason so many believe that soul mates are not real is because the way modern day movies present modern day relationships.
“All the garbage on television is about the feeling of a relationship and not the commitment that you make to love somebody,” said Calculus Teacher Mr. Klinger.
“It all comes down to commitment and the ability to put someone else needs ahead of your own.”
The definitions of a soul mate vary greatly and it is difficult to pinpoint what a soul mate truly is. But one thing is for certain, it involves relationship between two individuals, and that takes effort to stay together.
“Any couple can stay together as long as they want to, if they are willing to work at it,” said Klinger.
Finding a soul mate can also be a heart-wrenching experience, this happens when individuals feel lost when they do not find their other half. People go wrong when they try and replace the experience of love with materialistic objects.
“Find love and money will follow. Even if money doesn’t follow you need to marry for love,” said Newsome. “You could have all the money in the world but it you are unhappy with your life it doesn’t matter. Buy all the types of different material things but have no one to enjoy them with you and what do you really have?”
Whether or not humans were originally created with double the body parts, each and every person has their other half wandering out there, somewhere. people need to have faith in the fact that they will find their true match, it just takes time.
