On Tuesday, December 10th, 2024, Northwest High School’s (NWHS) choirs, Vocal Dimension, Serenade, Concert, Varsity, and Cantus held their winter holiday concert, at First United Methodist Church. These wonderful singers welcomed the cold season with warm music and inviting voices.
The United Methodist Church has housed the Winter Holiday Concert since before Northwest High School Choir Director Matthew Snell started his teaching career 17 years ago. Snell conducts all five of NWHS choirs. Despite putting on the Winter Holiday Concert for so many years Snell was still filled with emotions.
“There are some moments where you get nervous but they (choir students) work hard and take it very seriously, and we make sure they are very well prepared,” Snell said.
This concert could not have happened without the help of Snell and Acompanamist Jennifer Youngman. Youngman, known as the “Choir Mom” or “Wonder Woman”, is always there to support students with a warm hug. Without her, the singers would not have music to perform to.
“Mr. Snell and I approach our concerts as a team. Our students show up every day and we show up for them. We can’t do it without each other,” said Youngman.
Each choir put in the effort to do their part and learn their music in 6 weeks. From the choir room to the church, nerves were strong but for seniors, the tears were starting to well up.
This concert was a sad night for the seniors. As the seniors leave the church one final time with their choir they know it will be their last winter concert.
“I looked around and saw all of these seniors crying and that hit pretty hard too, this is it, I’m never going to sing with my friends again, however, I’m excited to see what the future holds for this program,” said Senior Kesley Clark.
If you wish to donate you can contact Snell at [email protected] or drop off cash or a check to the high school’s front office. The donations are used for things like new risers and new uniforms which greatly help the choir put on such great performances.
Despite the heat of the Church these phenomenal singers pushed through and ended both concerts with a standing ovation.
