Knowing how to cook is an essential life skill and should be a required class for all high school students. If there are ever moments when you live alone and cannot afford fast food every day, you need to know how to cook in order to survive. Another reason is If you ever have a family of your own in the future, knowing basic cooking skills can help you feed and take care of them.
In order to start or preserve culture and tradition, you should know how to follow, or create old or new family recipes to pass down. Knowing how to cook can bring confidence and relieve stress or worries.
“Cooking will require most of your attention and will distract you from your negative thoughts and worries,” said Cascade Community. When I cook or bake, I am so busy reading and following directions that I begin to feel less anxious.
Rush has found that knowing how to follow specific instructions, like you would in a recipe, is very important for everyday life. From doing school assignments to working a job you have to follow instructions to know what to do.
“Many of my students came into my class only knowing how to cook things like ramen noodles,” Rush said. “By the end of the year they know basic cooking skills such as how to use a knife, recipes, or seasonings.”
Maddie Bickley-Ford is a first-year culinary student at Wilson Talent Center in Mason, MI, and she is finding many benefits in taking culinary courses.
“Knowing how to cook benefits me for when I work,” said Bickley-Ford. “For work, I babysit and have to follow an everyday schedule which contains making breakfast and lunch.” Bickley-Ford’s babysitting job has shown her the benefits of cooking. Her knowledge has allowed her to manage her time more efficiently.
Owen Swaenepoel believes that cooking can help you with making yourself or others happy as well. Cooking a good meal or baking a yummy treat can automatically make someone’s day better.
“People cooking/baking for me makes me so happy!” Swaenepoel said. “Throughout my life I’ve always been the one to cook for others. So, when something is made for me it always tastes ten times better.”
Considering all of these facts, knowing how to cook is an essential skill. From knowing how to follow instructions to making yourself and others happy. Mrs. Rush, Maddie Bickley-Ford and Owen Swaenepoel have all shown the importance’s of knowing how to cook and how it can benefit everyone in the real world.
