“This is some of my teammates’ last game playing, they’ve been playing since Middle School,” Says Senior Jalen Jordan, “Playing with them was the best part about it.”
Jordan is a wide receiver on the Northwest High School (NWHS) Varsity football team.
One game out of the season is used to recognize the seniors and their accomplishments, this event is called Senior Night. During Senior Night, each senior athlete walks down the track next to their loved ones while their accomplishments are announced to the community. These consist of how long they’ve done the sport, a favorite memory, clubs they have participated in, college plans, etc.
Senior night has played a significant role in Northwest tradition for over twenty years now. Another important part of the night is when parents get to see the letters the players wrote for them. Football coaches print them out and present them during Senior night. Athletes work very hard throughout their high school sports, putting in many hours of their time, devotion, loyalty, and grit.
“Having my senior night in front of my community is important to me because these are the people I’ve grown up with…” Said Ka’Tasia brown.
Senior night does not just cover the football team’s seniors; the night is about everyone because many players have built bonds during their athletic careers. Through all of the hard work reflected in one night, the memories will be cherished forever.
“Many have grown up together with their teammates and put a lot of hours and time in together, so to know you have one last home game, 48 minutes on our turf, in front of our crowd and community (which for many of our athletes – they will never perform in front of a group that size again) is emotional,” said Football Coach Stafford Newsome.
The final whistle has blown, but the memories will last forever.
