Managing one sport by itself can be time-consuming, but managing three sports is an impressive feat. At Northwest High School, some students participate in one sport each trimester, called tri-sport athletes.
Senior Lucy Bivens has devoted her time to basketball, volleyball, and softball. She has been competing in these three sports throughout all of high school.
“I like being a part of so many different communities with friends and coaches,” said Bivens. Her reach throughout the school was felt earlier in the year when these classmates and friends voted her for homecoming queen.
Biven’s efforts and positivity are noticed by her teammates on and off the court.
“Lucy’s presence is so uplifting and she brings the mood up no matter the state of the game. Lucy is the heart of the team,” said Junior Hayley Gardner.
With the amount of sports being played, time management is one of the most important things to consider. A tri-sport athlete must be able to devote time to competing in multiple sports. Whether on the field or not, Junior Thomas Fall is always there for his team.
“As for his impact on the team. He was always there to fill a role wherever he was needed,” said Senior Brayden Hartke. Fall started his freshman year playing soccer, wrestling, and track. This also adds weightlifting to his class schedule during the school year and summer. As the years have gone by, Fall has become a master when it comes to time management.
“I get home from practice and eat then take a shower. Afterward, I spend time working on schoolwork. The last hour I have of the day I spend with my family,” said Fall.
Athletic Director Chris Galloway has spent many years watching these athletes juggle sports and academics
and is astonished by their determination.
“The kids [tri-sport athletes] have mastered time management,” said Galloway
From schoolwork to keeping relationships with their family and friends, tri-sport athletes are talented students. These students are devoted, and positive, and work hard for what they do.
