Has the Christmas spirit faded among teens in recent years? Many believe the pandemic and the shifting of traditions have changed how holidays are celebrated. This could potentially hurt special moments with families all across the globe.
The isolation of COVID-19 had a huge impact on the way people lived. It made people more closed off and nobody could see what they were doing. They had zero people to impress so they could have felt less pressured to do stuff for the holidays.
Many stores were also closed and running out of basic items like toilet paper. It would seem less important to focus on putting up Christmas decorations and participating in traditions than getting hand sanitizer, paper towels, or food.
A poll conducted at Northwest High School revealed that 39 out of 50 people said that people of Gen Z are losing and/or losing Christmas spirit. Senior Jonathan Shafor would agree with those 39 voters.
Shafor thinks that our generation is starting to grow up. People aren’t doing as much kid stuff anymore, like playing outside, building snowmen, or having snowball fights. Now, most teens would rather hang out with their friends, go to the mall, or play video games.
¨We lost our Christmas Spirit due to COVID-19, we just need to regain it,¨ said Shafor
Sophomore Cooper Keel seems to be somewhat in the middle of it all. Keel believes that because of the wars going on in Gaza and Ukraine, it may be hard to be happy during the holidays, especially for people in those countries. He thinks that the wars give people other things to worry about instead of family.
Keel tries to keep a high head and doesn’t give up his spirit. He still sees people dressing up for dress-up days and decorating the halls, but he also sees people not doing either. 5 people out of 50 in the poll would agree with Keel.
¨I try to keep high hopes, especially for family, like my nieces and nephews,¨ said Keel.
Hall Monitor Tina Jahr thinks that people are gaining Christmas spirit. Jahr sees people dressing up, giving each other gifts, and watching Christmas movies. 6 people out of the 50 in the poll ran would agree with Jahr.
Christmas used to be a wonderful time of year but with people growing up, snow being a thing
of the past, wars in distant countries, and families being separated during the time of the year that is supposed to bring them together. It could be easy to see why Gen-Z is losing its Christmas spirit.
