The earth is on a crash course to becoming a barren wasteland, and without group efforts working towards a change, the climate crisis will only get worse. Problems like air pollution and irregular weather patterns are significant issues that need to be resolved.
“It’s a problem…” said Junior Aiden Sommer. According to carbonbrief.org, in 2024, the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide was one of the fastest on record. So far climate change has raised temperatures by 1.3 degrees Celsius, or 34 degrees Fahrenheit, above pre-industrial era temperatures.
“…climate change is a problem. I don’t feel like the average person can really do anything to drastically impact it,” said Green Club member and Freshman Aiden French. “…it has to be a group effort.”
Northwest students who have a spot in their heart for the environment have found the Green Club the place to go. Green Club President and Sophomore Tiffany Taylor has been a part of the Green Club since her freshman year and believes that it is an important part of Northwest High School’s club community.
“…the world just needs to realize that the earth won’t be the same as it is now,” said Taylor. At the moment, the Green Club is actively trying to formulate a more effective way of recycling throughout the school. Along with hoping to implement a new recycling program, Taylor says that she hopes to donate the vegetables she grows in the Greenhouse’s garden to either the community closet or to local food banks.
One of the great parts about Green Club is that members who will be around in the springtime will be given their own plot in the greenhouse to plant an assortment of vegetables, fruits, and flowers of their choosing.
When Rosa Parks was imprisoned for not giving up her seat, people thought it was wrong, so they worked together to have her set free. When Great Britain imposed taxes on the colonists of America, they rallied together and worked to gain representation.
Groups that work towards change get results and having a group to keep the health of our planet in mind is something the students of northwest are happy to have.
